About Us

Uhambo is a Zulu word that means “a journey”.  We strive to build an organisation that serves as a vehicle for the journey of changing Africa – one child at a time – through education.

We are a registered Non-Profit Company (Uhambo Africa NPC 2012/225961/08) that was established in 2012 for the sole purpose of providing educational support to disadvantaged schools and children.  We are also a registered Non-Profit Organisation (117-295 NPO).  We currently operate in Johannesburg, South Africa with plans to expand throughout Africa as the organisation grows.

Given the challenges facing the education system in South Africa and many other African countries, we have decided to focus our efforts on helping schools to provide extra tutorial classes on Saturdays in order to supplement the formal classes conducted during the week.  These extra tutorials are conducted by volunteers on Saturdays.

Our Vision

To build a world class, sustainable school support system that integrates the children, parents and teachers.  We believe that involving parents in their children’s education is critical to their academic success.  We also believe that providing additional academic support to the children and empowering teachers with relevant and world class teaching techniques makes a meaningful contribution to alleviating the shortage of resources in schools faced by students and teachers alike.

Our Values

The founders and our volunteers share the following core values, which we aim to impart on the children we tutor:

  • Integrity
  • Accountability
  • Excellence
  • Professionalism
  • Respect

Our Objectives

  • Provide educational support to underprivileged children and their families by offering extra lessons, remedial lessons and adult classes for parents.
  • Provide schools with infrastructural support such as establishing libraries, facilitating book donations, setting up computer labs, etc.
  • Impart computer skills to teachers and pupils.
  • Raise funds to cover the cost of school uniform and basic hygiene necessities such as toothbrushes, sanitary towels and toothpaste.
  • Provide mentorship to the students and teachers
